Hemp: The Forgotten Giant

Long before synthetic fabrics, petroleum plastics and monoculture crops took over, there was hemp.

For centuries, hemp was one of the most widely used and cultivated crops across civilisations. It clothed farmers and royalty alike. It powered sails that discovered continents. It provided medicine, paper, rope, lamp oil, food and shelter. And unlike many modern materials, it did all this without exhausting the planet.

By the early 20th century, hemp had the potential to disrupt multiple major industries. New processing technologies made it cheaper and more efficient to produce fibre, paper and textiles from hemp. The future looked bright for this fast-growing, low-impact crop.

But hemp wasn’t just useful — it was a threat.

Chemical companies didn’t want competition for their new synthetic fibres. Timber barons didn’t want paper made from annual crops. Pharmaceutical giants didn’t want plant-based medicines growing in people’s backyards. And none of them wanted farmers holding the keys to a decentralised bioeconomy.

So they helped write hemp off the map — painting it with the same brush as marijuana, fuelling public fear, and lobbying governments to outlaw its production.

The result? Nearly a century of lost potential.
